Tips for travelers on original Medicare: the rules have changed in Medicare Medical Equipment Program

If you are on Medicare and travel often, you should know about a new Medicare program that may affect how you obtain certain medical equipment and supplies, such as oxygen or a standard power wheelchair, in some areas of the country. If you live in or travel to one of the areas in the link below and must obtain any of the medical items included in the program (see the link below), you will almost always have to use Medicare contract suppliers for Medicare to help pay for the item.
The program only applies to those with Original Medicare (not Medicare Advantage Plans like HMOs or PPOs). While your primary area of residence may not be affected, it is important to become familiar with the program if you plan to visit any of the nine communities listed below and you need to obtain items included in the program.
