Swedish study finds low mortality in non-smoking Alphas
MALMO, SWEDEN—A study published in the international journal of respiratory medicine Thorax found that non-smokers with severe Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency tend to live normal life spans.
The study followed 568 people from 1991 through September, 2007. The researchers concluded that non-smoking PiZZ individuals identified by screening—rather than pulmonary symptoms—do not have an increased mortality risk compared with the Swedish general population.
