Study of liver disease recruiting young Alphas from 6 months to 25 years old at 11 sites across U.S.
A research study is accepting young Alphas affected with liver disease from ages six months to 25 years old.
This is a so-called natural history study, a long-term study of four different genetic causes of liver disease.
Alpha-1 is one of several causes of cholestasis, a condition in which bile is not properly transported from the liver to the small intestine.
Cholestasis can be caused by an array of childhood diseases, including the genetic diseases Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Alagille syndrome (ALGS), bile acid synthesis and metabolism defects, and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) or benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis(BRIC).
This study will investigate the natural history and progression of these four cholestatic liver diseases to provide a better understanding of the causes and effects of the diseases.
The study is recruiting volunteers at 11 sites: San Francisco, CA; Denver, CO; Chicago, IL; two sites in St. Louis, MO; Cincinnati, OH; Baltimore, MD; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Houston, TX.
