Study finds no increased risk of disease for SS phenotype
A report in the journal Pulmonary Medicine found no significant difference in lung disease in people with the PiSS phenotype compared to those with the PiMM (normal) phenotype for Alpha-1.
The study by researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Florida College of Medicine consisted of interviews with 19 SS and 29 MM subjects enrolled in the Alpha-1 Foundation Research Registry or tested through the Alpha-1 Coded Testing (ACT) study.
The study authors cautioned that the study had many limitations, including the small number of study subjects, and that larger population studies are needed to come to any firm conclusions about whether those with the SS phenotype are more susceptible to lung disease.
