Radiologists assure patients of safety precautions against excessive radiation in medical tests, clinical studies

The Academy of Radiology Research has issued a press release assuring patients that hospitals and radiologists take precautions to guard against excessive radiation exposure in medical tests and research studies.

“A series of recent newspaper reports, journal articles and media stories have highlighted the dangers that patients may experience when they undergo diagnostic imaging or treatments that utilize ionizing radiation,” says the Academy release.

“Responses from national organizations and opinion leaders in this field have tried to put this risk in perspective of the ‘risk-benefit’ equation for each patient. That is, while every medical test and procedure carry some risk, this risk needs to be balanced by the benefit a patient may receive from an early, accurate diagnosis or a potentially life-saving treatment.”

The Alpha-1 Foundation is a patient advocacy member of the Coalition for Imaging and Bioengineering Research (CIBR), which is a division of the Academy for Radiology Research (Academy).
