Patient advocacy coalition asks Supercommittee to avoid cuts in Medicare Part D program

WASHINGTON — Medicare Access for Patients (MAPRx), a coalition of patient advocacy, family caregiver and health professional organizations, has written to the Congressional “Supercommittee” asking the committee to avoid cuts in the Medicare Part D prescription medication program, “safeguarding the well-being of beneficiaries with chronic
diseases and disabilities.”

The Alpha-1 Foundation, Alpha-1 Association and COPD Foundation are all members of the MAPRx coalition.

The MAPRx letter pointed out that cutting Part D benefits or raising patient costs such as co-pays will force many people to stop taking their prescription medicines and ultimately lead to more hospitalizations and greater expense for the Medicare program.

Medicare Part D “has been and continues to be extremely successful,” the letter said. “The program… has proven to cost far less than projected.”
