Obama names respirator inventor Forrest Bird, NIH Director Francis Collins among winners of highest US government honor
WASHINGTON—President Obama has named nine eminent researchers as recipients of the National Medal of Science, and four inventors and one company as recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
These are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers, and inventors.
Forrest Bird, PhD, the inventor of the modern medical respirator, and Francis Collins, MD, Director of the National Institutes of Health, were among the recipients.
Bird was one of four winners of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Collins was among nine winners of the National Medal of Science.
The award winners will receive their honors Oct. 7 at a White House ceremony.
