NYC Alpha-1 Swim Team tops fundraising goal
The New York City Alpha-1 Swim Team not only swam the English Channel under highly stressful conditions, but exceeded its fundraising goal for Alpha-1 research.
The five business executives on the team braved the dark of night, jellyfish, hypothermia, exhaustion and choppy 3-4 foot waves, but they conquered the Channel in 14 hours, 28 minutes. They began the swim in the waters of Dover, England, at 10:52 am Aug. 22 and finished on the rocky French coast just south of Calais at 1:20 am the following morning.
The swim was successfully completed, but the NYC Alpha-1 Swim Team had one more goal that needed to be reached. With immense support from the community, they managed to raise over $8,500 for Alpha-1 research, just shy of their $10,000 goal.
Their friend, Ed Mikell, who has two grandsons diagnosed with Alpha-1, started the Firstgiving page back in July.
Together, the six continued to pursue their $10,000 challenge, and have now topped $10,000, with donations still coming in.
Donations can still be made on their firstgiving site.
