LONG ISLAND, NY—It’s cold. It’s choppy. It’s prone to 7-foot swells. And it can be filled with tankers and jellyfish.
So why does the merciless English Channel hold such allure for five mature Americans – all business executives, husbands and fathers, even a grandfather?
“You have to have challenges in life,” said Steven Reiss, an attorney with homes in Manhattan and Hampton Bays. A previous claim to athletic fame was swimming beside Olympic multi-gold medalist Michael Phelps at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. “He was faster,” Reiss said.
