NIH director Francis Collins to keynote NHLBI meeting for public interest organizations
BETHESDA, MD—National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, MD, will give the keynote address Monday evening when the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) will hold its annual Public Interest Organization (PIO) meeting May 24-25.
The annual meetings are designed to offer public interest organizations across the United States to learn more about how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the NHLBI work and to meet NIH and NHLBI leaders.
The Alpha-1 Foundation and COPD Foundation are among the organizations represented at the meeting.
The program also provides planned time for networking with NHLBI staff and members of other organizations.
On Tuesday, May 25, the program will begin with an update on NHLBI activities by Susan B. Shurin, MD, acting director, NHLBI.
A presentation by Keith Hoots, MD, director of the Division of Blood Diseases and Resources; James Kiley, MD, director of the Division of Lung Diseases; and Michael Lauer, MD, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, will include a discussion of the NHLBI’s use of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.
John Burklow of the NIH Office of Communications and Public Liaison, and Angelina Wang of the National Hemophilia Foundation will discuss the rising importance of social networking in raising public awareness.
Barbara Rogers, president and CEO of the National Emphysema/COPD Alliance (NECA), will lead a round-table discussion on the topic of reaching out to patients.
Story Landis, MD, director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Robert Balaban, MD, director of the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research, will review stem cell science and the revised NIH stem cell policy.
