New Jersey to screen newborns for congenital heart disease
Medscape Today
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends pulse oximetry screening for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) in most newborn care settings, according to a report of clinical strategies posted online Aug. 22 in the medical journal Pediatrics. The report, entitled “Strategies for Implementing Screening for Critical Congenital Heart Disease,” will also be published in the November 2011 print issue of Pediatrics and is endorsed by the AAP, the American College of Cardiology Foundation, and the American Heart Association.
New Jersey will begin screening for CCHD Aug. 31 for all newborns before discharge from the hospital. Individual states will use the findings and recommendations from this report for guidance regarding implementing CCHD newborn screening.
