National Education Conference in San Francisco June 5-7

SAN FRANCISCO—The 18th Annual National Education Conference of the Alpha-1 Association will be held here June 5-7.

The conference begins Friday afternoon, June 5, with a 3 pm session on Building Friends for a Cure from the Alpha-1 Foundation.

There will be an overview of Alpha-1 by Michael Krowka, MD, Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, at 4 pm; a conference orientation for first-time attendees at 5, the annual Town Hall meeting at 5:30, followed by dinner and entertainment at 7 pm.

Among Saturday’s agenda highlights are talks on:
—Clinical trials and cutting-edge research
—Alpha-1 lung disease
—Alpha-1 liver disease in both children and adults
—Helpful hints for caregivers
—Updates by John W. Walsh, President and CEO of the Alpha-1 Foundation, and Marlene Erven, Executive Director of the Alpha-1 Association
—The importance of pulmonary rehabilitation
—Basics of organ transplants.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday morning, followed by a discussion on “Myths and Truisms about Alpha-1” by Robert A. Sandhaus, MD, a panel on access to care and medical reimbursement, and a talk on “Talking to your family about Alpha-1” by Genetics Counselor Dawn McGee

The conference is at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, 1333 Bayshore Highway.

The Hyatt Regency has already sold out of rooms under the group rate at $105. Rooms can still be reserved nearby at the Marriott San Francisco Airport Hotel at 650-692-9100 (under “Alpha-1 Association room block”). The Marriott is a block away from the Hyatt and a hotel shuttle bus will be provided. Room rates are $105 plus tax. Reservations must be made by May 6 to receive the discounted rate.
