Most Disabled Have Access to Medigap Insurance, Study Finds
WASHINGTON – Most disabled Medicare beneficiaries have access to Medigap insurance, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Medigap insurance, which helps to cover the 20 percent of many medical expenses typically not covered by Medicare, is mandated by just 24 states, but they cover 58 percent of the disabled American population, according to the foundation.
The data has been cited in support of a bill currently in Congress, (HR 1282, The Medigap Access Improvement Act), which would create a national standard requiring insurers to make Medigap plans available for purchase by those Medicare beneficiaries who are disabled. This legislation would create the same national standard for the Medicare disabled population that currently exists for the Medicare senior population.
