HBO Features Touching Alpha-1 Story

Alpha-1 will get its biggest-ever national awareness boost Tuesday, Nov. 20, when Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel will carry a major segment on Alpha lung transplant recipient Len Geiger and his warm relationship with the parents of his lung donor.

In 2002 Geiger received the lungs of Korinne Shroyer, who died at age 14.

HBO will tell the story of the close friendship that has developed between Geiger and Korinne’s parents, who made the heartrending decision to donate her organs. The show will be on HBO at 10 pm EST Tuesday. It will be rebroadcast at 10 pm Pacific Time Wednesday and frequently through the next month.

Interviewer Frank Deford and Geiger will talk about the vast under-diagnosis of Alpha-1 and the need for more testing. “We talk about the fact that even though transplants may help, they are not really an answer. The only real answer right now is increased awareness, early detection and treatment until a cure is found,” says Geiger.

Geiger is at right with his wife Christina and daughter Ava Corrine.

Len Geiger’s story is told on the Alpha-1 Foundation web site under Special Stories.
