Grueling heat is no match for a father running for a cause
The weather was hot and sticky at 85 degrees as Scott Casmer faced the 26.2 miles of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last Sunday.
But dehydration and muscle fatigue didn’t stop him from finishing the race in honor of his daughter, Kiara, and Alpha-1.

Kiara, who is five, was diagnosed with Alpha-1 as an infant.
The course snaked through 29 neighborhoods and historical landmarks, making it a great opportunity to show off his Team Alpha-1 shirt. “I heard there was a spectator estimate of 1.5 million,” Casmer said. “We never hit a spot without significant spectators for the whole 26.2 miles.”
The goal was to raise at least $1,000 to donate to the Alpha-1 Foundation for research, and with Scott’s offer to match the first $500 that goal has already been topped. He finished the race in four hours, 16 minutes, close to his four-hour target.
