Foundation CEO named to NIH Council of Councils

Alpha-1 Foundation President John Walsh has been named to the Council of Councils for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Walsh was already a member of the NIH Council of Public Representatives.

The Council of Councils advises the NIH director on matters related to policies and activities of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives.

“This is huge,” said Miriam O’Day, Senior Director for Public Policy at the Foundation. “This puts the Alpha-1 Foundation in a position where its president and CEO is helping to steer the direction of the country’s investment in biomedical research.”

Walsh said of his appointment, “I’m honored to be appointed to serve on the Council by the Secretary. This is an exciting time of transformational research under the leadership of Francis Collins at the National Institutes of Health.”

He added, “I very much look forward to working with Dr. Collins and the other members of the Council on issues related to the Common Fund and the strategic direction of the NIH.”
