New equation may help to ensure more calories, better nutrition for underweight COPD patients

The burden of COPD patients becomes all the more with malnutrition,
which is difficult to treat. A substantial minority of COPD patients are underweight, and they tend to be sicker than others with normal weight levels.
Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have come up with a new equation to calculate the energy requirement for underweight COPD patients. It is hoped that this will lead to better treatment results and, ultimately, better quality of life for these patients.
