Congressional letter urges Obama to take "swift action" to lift restrictions on embryonic stem cell research

WASHINGTON—Six Republican members of Congress have written to President Barack Obama urging him to lift restrictions on embryonic stem cell research imposed by former President Bush.

The Congressional leaders said they are encouraged by reports that the president plans such an executive order soon, but “we cannot stress enough the importance of swift action” on lifting restrictions.

The letter says embryonic stem cell research “holds great promised for alleviating the suffering of more than 100 million Americans” living with diseases for which there no good treatments or cures.
