Congressional bills would raise health insurance lifetime caps; Alpha-1 Foundation, Association issue Action Alert on bills

WASHINGTON—The House and the Senate have introduced companion bills to address spending limits (lifetime caps) placed on the majority of health insurance policies.

Typical health insurance policies limit overall lifetime spending, after which the policies no longer provide coverage. The limits are especially important to those with chronic conditions that require high-cost therapies, such as Alpha-1.

Health care costs continue to outpace general inflation, and the number of individuals who reach their lifetime caps has increased.

The Health Insurance Coverage Protection Act (H.R. 6528 and S. 2706) would phase in an increase in minimum lifetime caps in private insurance plans to $10 million, with an annual inflationary index thereafter.

The Alpha-1 Foundation and the Alpha-1 Association have issued an Action Alert for anyone interested in urging their US Senator or Member of Congress to take action on the bills.
