Charles Leonard Geiger, MD, dies; father of well-known Alpha

GAINESVILLE, GA—Charles Leonard Geiger, MD, died Wednesday, July 14. A retired pathologist, he had formerly been an officer in the US Air Force Medical Service and professor of clinical pathology at Emory Medical School.

He was the father of well-known Alpha Leonard Geiger, Jr., whose life was saved by a lung transplant for his Alpha-1-related lung disease. Len Geiger met the family of his donor, 14-year-old Korinne Shroyer, and took part with the Shroyers in many walks and runs to raise awareness of Alpha-1. Their story was featured in a national magazine and several national television broadcasts.

Geiger Sr. appeared in the TV broadcast of Mystery Diagnosis, talking about his son’s illness.
