CA teen competes in National Biking Championships to raise awareness, funds for Alpha-1 research
LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA—Thousands of professional and amateur athletes will participate next week in various categories of the USA National Mountain Biking Championships in Colorado—and Matt Colbran will be there, pushing his speed and endurance to the limit to help raise awareness and funds for Alpha-1 research.
Colbran is a 17-year old high school student, athlete and Alpha.
He says he’ll wear his Team Alpha-1 Jersey “with pride” as he races down the dusty, rocky terrain of SolVista’s Bike Park to help spread the word about Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.
The USA National Mountain Biking Championships are broken down into categories such as cross country, downhill, single speed, super downhill, mountain cross and short track races.
The Bike Park is at an elevation of 8,000 ft, and the altitude makes the competition much more difficult. In order to better adapt to this atmosphere, Colbran and his family will leave today and spend a few days in the Rockies.
Colbran plans to raise $5,000 to support the Alpha-1 Foundation’s mission to generate research and find a cure for Alpha-1 – a condition that affects his mother on a daily basis. So far, he’s raised $3,670.
