Bob Haggerty dies at 72; former treasurer, board member of Alpha-1 Association
Robert J. (Bob) Haggerty, a former member of the Alpha-1 Association board and its treasurer for many years, died Tuesday, May 4. He was 72.
He had homes in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota and Goodyear, Arizona.
The family plans a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 15 in Edina, MN. Haggerty, who loved to tell jokes and always enjoyed them more than anyone, made a request that is very much in character: “that no one attend the celebration of his life in the color black, as this is a time to laugh, share and toast to a life worth living.”
Haggerty was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency after the death of his older brother from complications related to Alpha-1 liver disease.
After his Alpha-1 diagnosis, he retired early from his job at 3M as sales and marketing director for the Occupational Health & Environmental Safety Division after a 37-year career.
He became involved with the Alpha-1 community after retirement. He joined the Association board in 2000 and remained a board member till 2009.
The formal obituary follows:

Bob fought the hard battle of Alpha 1 disease surrounded by his loving wife, Donna, and children; Shannon Haggerty, Dan Haggerty, David Haggerty, Molly Haggerty-Brewster, Chris Lund, Carla Dinndorf and Leah Lietzke and their families. In the spirit of his Irish heritage and Ole and Lena jokes, we are having a Celebration of Life worship service on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Normandale Lutheran Church of Edina at 1 p.m. 6100 Normandale Road, Edina. At the request of Bob, memorials can be made to the Alpha 1 Association in lieu of flowers. He also requested that no one attend the Celebration of his life in the color black as this is a time to laugh, share and toast to a life worth living. He touched all that he knew. A special thank you to all the staff at Mayo Clinics of Rochester and Phoenix.
