Alphas, families urged to take action to eliminate caps on health insurance benefits in Health Care Reform bill

The Alpha-1 Foundation and the Alpha-1 Association are urging Alphas and their family members to take action to end lifetime and annual insurance caps on health care benefits.

Please contact your senators today to ensure that the elimination of lifetime caps is included in the current legislation for the Health Care Reform Bill. Inadequate lifetime limits pose considerable challenges to people with high-cost chronic diseases and disorders such as Alpha-1.

An amendment (#3218) has been filed by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-ND, to the health care reform bill to phase out lifetime caps for grandfathered plans, set minimum lifetime caps on these plans at $5 million for two years, then $10 million for an additional two years.

By 2014, lifetime caps would be completely eliminated.

As the health care reform bill now stands, current health care plans are exempted from the plan to eliminate lifetime caps on health insurance benefits. These plans could limit lifetime benefits indefinitely.
