Alpha-1 5K Walk Miami -- a good time for Alpha-1 awareness and fundraising on Key Biscayne

MIAMI — They came, they walked, they had a good time.
And while they were at it, they raised some awareness and some funds for research on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.

Alphas, their friends and families joined the second annual Alpha-1 5K Walk Miami Saturday at Crandon Park, Key Biscayne. They had perfect November weather — temperatures in the 70s, low humidity and a pleasant morning breeze off Biscayne Bay.

Walkers ended their hikes — at their own pace, along a course that followed the waterfront — with food, a DJ, and an Alpha-1 awareness T-shirt for everyone.

Among the Alpha-1 educational efforts was an “Alpha-1 Walk & Learn Quiz” based on information posted along the course. Everyone who answered the short quiz got a chance to enter a drawing and win a gift basket. The winner was Sinead Demetrius of Miami.

Entertainment Connections Premier Disk Jockeys of Florida provided the music. CSL Behring and Talecris Center for Science and Education sponsored the walk. An exercise expert from Equinox Fitness provided stretching and exercise tips for the walkers, and CVS Pharmacies offered flu shots.
