Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research applauds nomination of Collins as new director of National Institutes of Health

Washington, DC – The Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research, a coalition that includes the Alpha-1 Foundation, issued the following statement today on President Obama’s nomination of Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, to be the new director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

“The patients and health professionals, scientists and institutions represented by the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research are pleased that President Obama has selected Dr. Francis Collins to be the 16th director of the National Institutes of Health.

“Dr. Collins is an exceptional scientist and administrator, as demonstrated by his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his exemplary leadership of the National Human Genome Research Institute and the Human Genome Project.”

The Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research is a coalition of more than 300 patient and voluntary health groups including the Alpha-1 Foundation, medical and scientific societies, academic and research organizations, and industry. The Ad Hoc Group has one mission: to enhance the federal investment in biomedical, behavioral, and population-based research by increasing the funding for the National Institutes of Health.
