The Alpha-1 Foundation is pleased to announce this important AASLD Basic Research Single Topic Conference on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and Other Liver Diseases Caused by Aggregated Proteins. Accredited by the AASLD, this conference will focus on the important and emerging topic of the molecular pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches to the hepatotoxicity associated with the inherited metabolic disorder – Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency.
History: This Workshop will build upon the work of the Alpha-1 Foundation’s 2000 International Scientific Conference, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and Other Conformational Diseases (Nature Cell Biology, Vol. 2 No. 11, Nov 2000 pg. E207-E209) and the significant recent advances in the understanding of AAT Deficiency.
Course Objectives:
1. Understand the molecular biology of protein folding, the role of the protein degradation system, and the consequences of misfolding of specific proteins seen in several clinical disorders.
2. Discuss the current concepts of the molecular mechanisms responsible for liver injury in patients with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.
3. Explain the current molecular approaches underway to develop effective therapies to treat the liver manifestations of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and other disorders involving protein misfolding.

Alpha-1 Foundation
ABOUT THE ALPHA-1 FOUNDATION
The Alpha-1 Foundation is a not-for-profit 501( c )(3) organization dedicated to providing the leadership and resources that will result in increased research, improved health, worldwide detection and a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). Alpha-1 is a genetic disorder that can cause liver and lung disease in children and adults.
The Foundation has made considerable progress towards its mission to raise awareness and stimulate specific areas of research through the organization of Scientific Meetings, Conferences, Workshops, Working Groups and Symposia. Foundation-organized meetings are designed to focus on specialized topics to advance knowledge of Alpha-1 and address critical issues in the areas of improved treatments, education, detection and ethical issues.
One international scientific conference is held each year, and several Critical Issue Workshops are organized in response to rapid developments in research or in response to relevant social or public policy issues that affect the Alpha community and the broader lung and liver disease communities. Satellite sessions and educational forums that highlight Alpha-1 research are also held concurrent with national and international scientific conferences.
