More than 100 to walk acoss the bridge or through the park, at 2nd George Washington Bridge Walk this Saturday, May 9
NEW YORK, NY – More than 100 people have already registered for the second annual George Washington Bridge Walk this Saturday, May 9, as St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and a group of Alphas from New York, New Jersey and the surrounding area are teaming up to raise money for Alpha-1 awareness and research.
And organizers say more people continue to register, and everyone is still welcome.
The walk will start on the Fort Lee, NJ side and will be an at-your-own-pace walk across to the Manhattan side, just under a mile and a half and then turn around and head back. Bus terminals are located at the end of the bridge and can be taken back across as well.
“You do what you can. If you can only walk half of the bridge and turn around, that’s just fine,” said Joe Reidy, Board Member for the Alpha-1 Foundation and committee member for the event.
Another possibility will be to take part in the Fort Lee Historic Park Walk. The park, which is just south of the bridge, has some fantastic scenery. Committee members Lori Tartell, Pat Cochran and Joe Reidy are working out a plan to have a carpool to the park.
Last year, about 100 people participated in the bridge walk, raising over $8,000 for Alpha-1 research and programs.
“It was great” said Fred Walsh, who came down from Massachusetts to participate last year and is excited to walk again. “It really seemed to be a family event. Alphas and their families from six months to 72 years old participated.”
So far, there are over 100 participants registered to walk, and together they have raised more than $5,000 to date.
And the event isn’t just for New Yorkers. Walkers from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania are also expected to participate.
